NVM Express is honored to receive the Flash Memory Summit (FMS) 2022 Most Innovative Memory Technology Award for the NVM Express® (NVMe®) 2.0 specifications. We are proud of this achievement and of the work from our member companies and contributors.

As a result of a multi-year effort from the NVM Express Technical Work Group, NVM Express announced the refactored NVMe 2.0 specifications in June 2021—allowing for faster and simpler development of the increasingly diverse NVMe solutions. This refactoring has encouraged the development of independent command sets like Zoned Namespaces (ZNS) and Key Value (KV), while enabling support for the various underlying transport protocols common to NVMe and NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF™) technologies.

NVMe 2.0 Specifications: Simplifying Adoption in Emerging Markets

Refactoring the NVMe 2.0 specifications reduced complexity allowing developers to utilize only the pieces of the specifications needed for their deployment. The refactoring eliminates inefficiencies, improves performance and enables many more storage features, while also driving new form factors.

“Enterprise data centers need to create very high-performance storage networks and the emerging protocols of NVMe and NVMe over Fabrics have become pervasive technologies of choice,” said Jay Kramer, Chairman of the Awards Program and President of Network Storage Advisors Inc. “We are proud to recognize NVM Express Technical Work Group with the release of NVMe 2.0 specification, now providing a common command set and architecture around unified client, cloud and enterprise storage. This includes new support for hard disk drives (HDDs) and the specification encourages the development of independent command sets with new features, such as Zoned Namespaces (ZNS) and Key Value (KV).”

NVMe technology has evolved from a basic SSD and a simple PCIe® interface to the storage interface in everything from cell phones, tablets, and laptops to refrigerator-sized storage arrays and data centers that fill warehouses. The NVMe 2.0 specifications are optimized for various market segments like artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), gaming, hyperscale data centers, High-Performance Computing (HPC) and more.
